Michel Dyakonov

Professor of Physics Laboratoire Charles Coulomb

Michel Dyakonov received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (1966) from Ioffe Institute in Saint Petersburg, USSR. He worked at Ioffe Institute until 1998, when he became a professor at the University of Montpellier, France.

He was elected as an Honorary Member of the Ioffe Institute (2014). His interests are in the fields of solid-state physics, spin physics, physics of 2D electrons. He is also a recipient of numerous awards including the State Prize of USSR, Beller Lectureship Award from the American Physical Society, and the grand prize from the French Physical Society.

His name is connected to several phenomena: Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation mechanism, Dyakonov surface waves, Dyakonov-Shur instability. Together with Perel, he predicted the Spin Hall Effect which has become a subject of intense studies.
