Judie Rinearson joined K&L Gates as a Partner in 2016 and co-lead the firm’s Fintech team. After 20 months based in London, she returned to the New York City office but is happy to say that she still maintains a presence in their London office, and visit London at least quarterly.
She has been recognized as an authority in both the traditional areas of payments (including credit and debit cards, payment processing and payment systems) as well as new and emerging payments (such as mobile and electronic payments, prepaid cards, e-wallets, blockchain and cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin). Judie has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, particularly in the areas of non-bank money services & payment products.
She was previously a partner at Bryan Cave where she co-chaired the Payments Team, and before that, was Group Counsel at American Express. Fully experienced in both the “issuing” and “acquiring” side of the payments business, Judie has negotiated complex agreements with strategic co-branded partners, processors and Independent Sales Organizations (ISOs), major retailers and service providers, prepaid card issuers & program managers, international remittance companies,mobile payment providers, as well as the terms and conditions & disclosures that accompany such products.
Judie has hands-on experience in all legal aspects of launching and managing a range of payment products, from prepaid cards of all kinds to wallets, bill pay, P2P, bitcoin exchanges, international remittances, and foreign exchange. Her practice includes advising on fraud avoidance and compliance with federal banking and anti-money laundering laws, as well as state money transmitter licensing laws, consumer protection laws and abandoned property laws.
She is currently involved within the UK's Emerging Payments Association (EPA), the UK's Prepaid International Forum, the US's Money Services Business Association (MSBA), and the US's Network Branded Prepaid Card Association (NBPCA).
