John Tuders

Executive Director, Growth and Innovation Skookum

John Tuders believes innovation is a mindset, not a skill set. It involves approaching each challenge with an open mind, constantly testing new ideas, and learning quickly. This is the philosophy he has applied in every aspect of his life and career.

After working in business development, marketing, and analytics roles for small and mid-size firms, he joined Bank of America where he spent 17 years in product strategy and innovation. He led a variety of teams (from 15-1600 people) and several major initiatives (from emerging payments and mobile technology transformation to fraud strategy and innovation).

Over the years, he became Bank of America’s go-to “builder”: the person they called on to build out disciplines and structures whenever the organization wanted to move into a new space. His diverse experience and strong relationships enabled him to bring together disparate teams so they could forge new paths and products together. In just a few years, they grew the bank’s innovation practice from a fledgling department with 6 people to a 60-person-strong incubator group that produced several ground-breaking technologies and patents during his tenure.

His passion for helping companies grow through design and innovation then led him to his current role as Executive Director, Growth and Innovation at Skookum, a Charlotte-based firm that improves lives and transforms businesses through digital products and experiences. While it was a big change after almost 20 years in financial services and telecommunications, he couldn’t be more excited to be part of a forward-thinking, values-based team that’s helping businesses around the world create their future.

In addition to guiding Skookum’s clients, he enjoys guiding kids through IntersectionsUNCC and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as shaping the next generation of design thinkers as a doctorate student and adjunct faculty member at UNC Charlotte. In every endeavor, whether professional or personal, his goal is to always keep an empathetic ear and challenge the status quo so we can iterate and innovate together.
