Joel Monegro is a partner at Placeholder, a venture capital firm based in New York City. He started the firm with his friend Chris Burniske and mentor Brad Burnham in the summer of 2017 after ~3 years at Union Square Ventures developing the firm's early blockchain investment thesis and portfolio. Prior to that, he set up a government office in the Dominican Republic with a mandate to develop the national tech startup agenda. There, in 2013, he fell down the crypto-rabbit hole while researching alternative payment infrastructure technologies they could use across the continent, and since then it has occupied nearly all his mental space. He works to decentralize wealth and power by using the crypto network to restructure capitalism for the Information Age.
