About

Dr. Ghazala Shahabuddin is a researcher, consultant, and educationist working on issues at the interface of human society and biodiversity conservation in India and Asia. After an MSc in Ecology from Pondicherry University in 1993, she earned her Ph.D. in conservation biology from Duke University (the USA, 1998) in which she studied the ecological processes involved in butterfly extinction in forest fragments in Lago Guri, Venezuela.

After her Ph.D., Dr. Shahabuddin worked with the research of NGO’s including Winrock International (Delhi) and Wildlife Conservation Society- India Programme, and as a consultant with World Bank (Washington DC) and CARE-Nepal. From 2009 to 2014, Dr. Shahabuddin worked as an Associate Professor at the School of Human Ecology at Ambedkar University, Delhi where she helped establish MA and Ph.D. programs in Environment and Development.

Dr. Shahabuddin has worked and published over 25 research papers in scientific journals and books on sustainable forestry, community-based conservation, ornithology and protected area policy in India. In addition, she has more than 50 popular articles to her credit in publications such as Biblio and Down To Earth. In 2010, her book ‘Conservation at the Crossroads: Science, Society and the Future of India’s Wildlife’ was published by Permanent Black, which examines the science and politics of nature conservation in India.

She is currently associated with Centre for Ecology, Development, and Research (CEDAR) where she is studying bird diversity, land-use change and forest dynamics of forests in Central Himalayas and their contribution to biodiversity, as well as bird conservation in Mangar Bani, Haryana. Her latest book (co-edited with Dr. Sivaramakrishnan) is entitled "Nature in the New Economy: People, Wildlife and the Law in India" and will be published by Orient Blackswan in June 2019.
